Door Handle Replacement
It's worth it to replace door handles if you don't like the way they look, or if they are difficult to use. With a bit of patience, you can put in a new handle in no time.
The majority of modern door handles come with cover plates that hide the screws for an attractive appearance. However, you'll have to attach them separately if the new handle does not have them attached already.
Removing the Old Handle
Door handles aren't just an an important aesthetic addition to your home, but they're essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. As time passes, the door handle may begin to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It could also begin to look worn out and old. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace your door handle.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means that you are unable to no longer lock or unlock your door, which could pose the risk of security for you and your family.
It is also recommended to replace your door handle if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle could be quite dangerous, especially if your children or elderly family members are unable to open it and could get trapped within. It's easy to fix a damaged handle on the door.
Most modern door handles are a standard size, so they will fit on any door. If you aren't certain if your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure the holes in its housing. This will allow you to buy the right door handle.
It is the easiest way to remove the old door handle by taking it off from the door. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. However some door handles have the cover plate which hides the mounting screws, so you'll have to cut off this cover plate to get access to the screws beneath. After you have removed the old handle, make a note of how the spindle has been connected. This will help you align the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. But, you'll have to locate the small latch which is located on the edge cut piece. Once you've removed the latch, you can take the handle off the strike plate and then the latch from the door edge.
Take off the Strike Plate
You'll have to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the door's latch hooks in when the door is closed. The box that the new handles come with will offer two options for latch plates: either a rectangular or circular (see the above diagram that outlines the parts of the door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will let the latch hook onto the strike plate, making the handle easier to use.
The first step is to take off the screw that holds the latch plate. These screws are often tight, and will require some force to loosen. It might be beneficial to have a second person assist in this area if it is possible.
The latch plate should come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move, use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that came with the new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Don't over tighten your screws as this could damage the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, shut and open the door to see whether it locks and closes correctly. If not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate up or down, or forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door still moves or jiggles, then you may have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too narrow, the incorrect size of the latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Removal of the Latch
The latch is the angled piece of metal that slides in and out of the hole on the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into a hole on the door frame so that the door remains closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to correct the issue.
It's hard to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver in order to remove it. Once you've removed the trim plate, it'll be easy to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the latch and spindle in place.
If the latch isn't easily removed using a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item in the latch's slot that is recessed and gently turn or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch start to separate. It may take this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to let it out.
You should be able slide the new latch into its slot with no issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is properly positioned in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers, and then use the new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.
Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is in line with the measurement.
If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you'll need a new one. If you are not changing locks the new lock will fit inside your existing recess, and work with the keys you have already. Remove the cover plate

Remove the screw that is holding the handle in the interior and set it aside once the cover plate is removed. Remove the screws that secure both the outer and inner plates.
